This Washing machine in Woolahra I have repaired twice (yes 2 times) repair is not really the right word to use ‘maintained’ is a better choice .

So this W918 was purchased by a Family of 5 in 1995 and then the kids grow up,moved out and Miele W918 still washes the clothes of 2 .The first visit in 2006 was really an issue with the drain filter and I fixed this on the spot ,by then the Miele was 11 years old. The second visit this August 2013 the inlet valve failed and I replace this also in one visit , now the Miele washer is 18 years old and still washes.

So the calculated washing time is currently by 6552hr/cycles perhaps more (I used 7 washes (one hr per cycle) per week and times 18 years )

One of my favorite Miele Model W918 hot and cold water entry Germany built and serviced !

Here is an extract from the current.com.au article from the 28/3/2013 by James Wells”

“These products have been developed over the last five years since Generation 5000 was launched in 2008 and the development of the next generation of products has already commenced.

“Each category within the Generation 6000 range of products features genuine Miele-exclusive technology which offers real consumer benefits that can be demonstrated in-store to deliver that ‘wow factor’ during the sales process,”

“Generation 6000 once again represents Miele’s commitment to innovation and offering value-generating propositions for our Chartered Agents. We are continuing to perform our role to improve the quality and reputation of major appliances globally. ” said David Woollcott, Miele sales director in Australia to James Wells in Gütersloh, Germany in March

Have you ever been a little confused about the issue of water hardness for Miele Dishwashers? Don’t worry, you’re not alone.

Like most you’d probably just consult the Miele manual:

“The dishwasher is set at the factory for a hardness level of 0.2 – 0.7 mmol/l (1- 4 °d )” and “Mains water with a hardness level higher than 0.7 mmol/l (4 °d –German scale) needs to be softened.

- The water softener requires reactivation salt.
- The dishwasher must be programmed for the water hardness in your area.
- Your local water authority will be able to advise you of the water hardness level in your area”.

Now, unless you have a background in chemicals, this explanation is ‘as clear as mud’.

At this point, most people would look elsewhere for help. First stop probably the Sydney Water website. Unfortunately it’s also not very helpful for explaining what water hardness is, let alone what value you need for your Miele Dishwasher!

Here’s a much simpler explanation
In case you ever notice the salt light on in your Miele dishwasher, don’t despair. Here’s a quick explanation of what to do.

From my work and testing in certain service areas in Sydney, the average water hardness is 51 ppm. This value converts to 0.51 mmol/l, which is the value (mmol/l ) given by Miele in its operating manual (you’ll find this in the Before Using for the First Time section). As an aside, if you’re German, this basically relates to a hardness of 3 °d.

So, you need to set your Miele Dishwasher to setting 3. And you do not need salt.

You’ll see that while the manual says “mains water with a hardness level higher than 0.7 mmol/l (4 °d –German scale) needs to be softened”, this only applies to the areas I have listed on my website.

How did I arrive at this value?
A basic calculation. Your area’s water hardness (for Sydney Water) is worked out by calculating:

– ppm divided by 100.

This gives you mmol/l. Then, check the manual for the correct settings in German scale (°d). Simple.

Where did I source my data?
First, I used Choice magazine, which tests its water supply weekly (they’re located in Marrickville, which has an average water hardness value of 47 ppm). I also used my own water hardness strip tests and the Sydney Water website for Treatment Plants in the inner west, eastern suburbs and CBD. Interestingly, the water in all of the areas where my customers are located comes from the Kurnell Desalination Plant, which feeds in at the Potts Hill Plant and has the following hardness values:

45-57 ppm

0.45 -0.57 mmol/l

2 – 3 deg (German scale)

What’s more, it’s soft water according the German/European standard (2007) and is soft up to 8.4°d German scale.

Now for the issue of dishwasher salt …. Actually, I think that’s enough information for one day. You’ll find more about that in my next blog, so stay tuned.

Still unsure?
If you’re still a little unsure about water hardness, don’t worry, I’m here to help. Simply email me. I’ll be glad to hear from you. And if I’ve solved your problem, that’s great!

While I was surfing the net, I found this quote from the late Steve Jobs on wired.com:

“Design is not limited to fancy new gadgets. Our family just bought a new washing machine and dryer. We didn’t have a very good one so we spent a little time looking at them. It turns out that the Americans make washers and dryers all wrong. The Europeans make them much better – but they take twice as long to do clothes! It turns out that they wash them with about a quarter as much water and your clothes end up with a lot less detergent on them. Most important, they don’t trash your clothes. They use a lot less soap, a lot less water, but they come out much cleaner, much softer, and they last a lot longer.”

“We spent some time in our family talking about what’s the trade-off we want to make. We ended up talking a lot about design, but also about the values of our family. Did we care most about getting our wash done in an hour versus an hour and a half? Or did we care most about our clothes feeling really soft and lasting longer?

“We ended up opting for these Miele appliances, made in Germany. They are really wonderfully made and one of the few products we’ve bought over the last few years that we’re all really happy about. These guys really thought the process through. They did such a great job designing these washers and dryers. I got more thrill out of them than I have out of any piece of high tech in years.”

Do you own a Miele vacuum cleaner? Well, here’s a quick reminder about two very clever features – the parking system and the bumper strip.

1. The Parking System

Parking system

Did you know that every Miele vacuum cleaner has a parking system on the back of it? (See picture at left.)

This is really handy when you need a quick break while vacuuming. Just hook the floor head into the parking system, which puts your vacuum cleaner into standby mode (if your model has an automatic switch-off feature). This saves energy until you come back and neatly secures the hose so that nobody trips over it.

2. The Bumper Strip

Bumber strip

Everybody knows how easy it is to accidentally bump into furniture or walls when vacuuming – you’ve probably got the scratches and marks to prove it. Not so with your Miele vacuum cleaner, though. Its soft plastic bumper strip all around the bottom of the cleaner protects your walls and furniture from accidental damage, and is easily cleaned with a sponge and dishwashing detergent.
